On Friday night the Basha Bears went into the state quarterfinals at Austin Field looking to avenge their regular season loss to Chandler, but the Wolves didn’t let that happen. Chandler High’s dominance over Basha continued as they pitched their first shutout of the season, 55-0.
It was obvious that the Bears were in for a long night when Bryce Perkins escaped from the pocket and ran for a 60-yard touchdown on the second play of the game. Chandler’s defense immediately forced a stop, and when Basha’s punt was botched due to a bad snap, the offense took over and Chase Lucas was able to squeeze his way into the end zone for a touchdown to give Chandler a 14-0 lead.
On the next possession, Chandler defensive captain Jaray Mills was able to get an interception and return it 37 yards for six points. Chandler was up 21-0 halfway through the first quarter, and they weren’t even close to letting up.
While Basha sophomore QB Ryan Kelley flashed signs of his 3000 yard, 30 TD talent at times, he struggled to find his receivers in critical situations. On Basha’s ensuing possession after the pick-6, Chandler DB Kyree Woods intercepted Kelley on a 4th down play. Chase Lucas were able to capitalize on the turnover, finishing Chandler’s next drive with a 21-yard touchdown.
Up 27-0 after one quarter, Chandler kept building a lead as Perkins found N’Keal Harry for a 38-yard touchdown on 4th and 8. Later in the perios, Lucas found the end zone for a third time, and Chandler’s defense added a goal line stop to secure a 41-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, Jaray Mills got his second interception of the night, returning it 45 yards into Basha territory. Chase Lucas scored from 8 yards away to give the Wolves a 48-0 lead. Anthony Clay was able to score an 18-yard rushing touchdown to seal a 55-0 Chandler victory.
-This was Chandler’s first shutout of the season.
